The competition continues through Saturday with 2,000 lifeguards participating in similar events.
In addition to the 2,500 competitors, more than 6,000 spectators are expected to watch the free competition in viewing stands on the Boardwalk behind the Hilton Daytona Beach Oceanfront Resort, according to organizers. Spectators, starting Thursday, will be able to view the competition from five 52-inch HD TV screens behind the Hilton.
Wednesday's events include a beach run, iron guard, surf race, rescue race and beach Flags. The event was also a way for Volusia County's lifeguards to show off their skills.
